Have you heard of Plexus 2007?
Apparently it's a web marketing conference and demo that's being held in Toronto at the end of November.
Plexus is aimed at assisting marketing leaders, communicators, technophobes, CEOs, CMOs, CBOs, execute the myriad of ways in which they can grow their brands on the web. Plexus is our metaphor for our closely woven "interconnectedness". Everything you should know about marketing on the web will be available to you at Plexus 2007.
Really, everything? Because what your conference is teaching me right now is that the web looks like this:
I'm sure these guys are great. Really. But if you can't invite a woman to keynote, can you at least make the placeholders be female silhouettes so that I can hold out some hope that out there, somewhere, there is someone who is interested in diversity at conferences. The hilarious thing is that I believe they've already booked the other two keynotes. They are listed on their speakers page. They look like this:
and
And in reality, the web looks like this:
This was taken from the 2K Bloggers project. These are also the faces that grace the cover of Joseph Jaffe's new book, Join the Conversation.
So, if you're looking for some diversity along with your web marketing, I encourage you to consider the Toronto Geek Girls Dinner or Women 2.0 events or Yahoo!'s Intrapreneur Fireside Chat (oh, it's in California. How about it Yahoo! Canada? You seem to like the chicks! Got enough of those big purple chairs for a Canadian Fireside Chat? In Vancouver though, not T-dot?)
This is Nancy Vonk and Janet Kestin, Chief Creative Officers, from Ogilvy Mather in Toronto. I can't find the fantastic picture of Laura Gaggi, president of Gaggi Media on their site (it's only embedded in the pdf, blech) - but she was in the big purple chair as well. As was Mitch Joel. Fantastic! That's what I'm talking about .. representing the diversity of talent, perspectives and opinions that are present in Canada.
Because the more diverse the talent/perspective/idea base that we're all exposed to, the better our own ideas and contributions will be!

Have you ever tried to communicate the magnitude of the new media landscape to either clients or your boss?
Have you been looking for solid, concise definitions of the different media choices available to you?
Have you been praying for someone to put all that together in a handy, dandy BEAUTIFUL 12 page PDF that gives you not only the above two elements, but a large, integrated diagram (for use as a wall poster) showing "traditional" and "digital" media channels as well as how they flow through a product launch?
Then run, do not walk, over to .think, Brainstorm's blog, to download the 5th part of their "B Series" awareness campaign "The MediaSphere".
Holy crap .. this just solved about a b'zillion issues for me trying to illustrate this for my clients.
And this is a whole series! They have a summary sheet of "Web 2.0 and Generation Me". And this isn't just pretty pictures ... they describe in detail their thought process for campaign elements and selected media - both on and offline. They discuss the creative strategy and process that went into the "B Series".
If you ever want an exceptional example of how to think about a campaign - from conception through execution and measurement (their next post will be on the metrics of this campaign), go read this.
I've been <3'ing the .think blog and Brainstorm for a while now. But this, this is like .. WOW.
Like uber-wow.
They are SO going to the top of my friends list on Facebook!

Next week I'll be in Toronto for my upcoming nuptials, but before tying the knot, I'll be hanging out with some very geeky girls at the Toronto Geek Girls Dinner and talking about virtual worlds.
From the TGGD blog ...
November Girl Geek Dinner with Kate Trgovac
November's dinner is almost upon us - scheduled for Wednesday November 14th at Brassaii (dinner is $40 pp, taxes and gratuity included), Kate Trgovac will be speaking to our group about Virtual Worlds.
The popularity of virtual worlds is rising. Second Life is one of the most well-known with Canadian brands like Telus, Harlequin and Canada Post setting up a presence or holding an event, but what about other worlds? Habbo Hotel. Virtual Laguna Beach. Club Penguin. StarDolls. Sony’s Home. Billions of dollars are being invested globally in 2D and 3D immersive experiences. How will these experiences fit in with social networks? What’s the appeal? Should I be worried: as a marketer, a parent, a participant? Kate will share some of her thoughts on the rising popularity of virtual worlds and give an overview of a few of the more popular ones.
There are a limited number of spots, so please sign up on the wiki if you're planning on attending.
The other thing is that my company, Reinvent!, is also sponsoring 10 students to attend. So, if you're a student, head on over to the wiki to reserve a spot! (Note, in the interest of transparency: they're not letting me talk b/c Reinvent! is the student sponsor this time - actually happened the other way around. I figure I do a fair bit of complaining bitching raising concerns around the poor visibility of women in tech and in marketing. This is my way of helping that cause. I promise, no sales pitches for Reinvent!.)
If you're a Geek Girl, interested in virtual worlds and are in Toronto that night, would be great to have you come out. If you're a guy, you need to bring a female or be brought by one (Mosley .. if you want to attend, you can be my date!).
Also .. I can go on and on and on about Virtual Worlds. Anything you're interested in hearing about? Leave a comment!
Kudos to Maggie Fox and Jenny Bullough who run this thing. They are some of the busiest folks I know and I so appreciate that they make the time to keep this group going.

We're all familiar with Dove's Evolution campaign that has attempted to turn current notions of waif-like beauty on its head, assert that every woman is beautiful and build women and girls' self-esteem.
What next?
They've launched a new campaign called "Onslaught" which is about the media messages that young girls are exposed to and how we can get involved to counteract those negative messages.
But here's an often overlooked area of beauty ... the disabled (or differently-abled). This video shows some of the competitors in the "Beauties in Motion 2007" competition in Hanover, Germany.
The video narration is in German, but even if you don't speak German, the video is very watchable, just to see the great time these young women are having and how they present themselves and how they feel good about themselves. Sure, pageants aren't everyone's cup of tea, but bringing this issue to light is a good thing.
How 'bout it, Dove?
