OK, here's something interesting you don't see everyday (and who knows how long you'll see this post - I have a feeling it might be edited; there is a screencap on the right): a media company (CBC) telling you how to avoid advertising on their site.
A post today called "Skinning CBC.ca" on Inside the CBC (a blog I *love* by the way .. for its attempt to shed a little light on a big institution) tells how to apply your own stylesheet to the CBC site. But there's also a little note on the post that says:
Look ‘ma! No ads!
One of the added bonuses with this CSS is that it also removes the advertising from the site. I’ll let you guys figure out how to do that on your own (hint: download and take a look at the bottom of my css).
I don't know if anyone at the CBC appreciated the irony of the post, but I do. That a geek (and I mean that uber-affectionally) at the CBC has given us the knowledge (power) to remove the ads from our viewing of the CBC website in a post that comes only a day after an announcement about how 55% of CBC Television's funding comes from advertising.
This takes citizen journalism to a whole new level.
Rock on, Blake Crosby, rock on!
