Cool Sites: One of the great things about going to any conference is hearing about sites you hadn't heard of before. Here's my list of cool tools, sites and blogs that I learned about at Future of Web Apps:
- Alexaholic - Alexaholic blends Alexa website traffic graphs with a lightweight ajax-enhanced interface to satisfy hard-core Alexa traffic chart junkies – aka Alexaholics.
- BeRecruited.com - Social networking site that connects high school athletes and college coaches.
- Digg Spy - a real-time view of what's being dugg.
- The Hype Machine - track songs and discussion posted on the best music blogs.
- Fly Spy - an alpha site that tracks the ups and downs of the airline ticket market. Only Minneapolis as the start city right now, but you can still see interesting trends.
- FareCast - another airline ticket prediction market. US cities only.
- TripHub - plan group travel.
- Last.fm - Last.fm is the flagship product from the team that designed the Audioscrobbler music engine. More than ten million times a day, Last.fm users "scrobble" their tracks to our servers, helping to collectively build the world's largest social music platform.
Quick Insights: Most of the speakers at Future of Web Apps had some great things to say, but there were really only one or two actionable insights in their talks. This is the quick insight list:
- Tantek Çelik from Technorati - microformats rock. Just do it.
- Evan Williams from Odeo - (on how to get things done ...) Don't talk, TYPE!
- Mor Naaman from Yahoo - ZoneTag is some cool shit. Tag your photos taken with your cell phone based on the cell tower. Upload to Flickr. Enjoy. [You can also geotag your other Flickr photos too.]
- Tom Stocky from Google's AJAX Search API - More cool shit. Integrate a dynamic Google search module into your web page.
All in all, hours of exploration on the information superhighway :-)
